Unfortunately, in recent years the red, white and blue flag has come to symbolize not freedom and democracy, but greed, hypocracy and empire. And with good reason, the United States has military forces in 156 countries - that's 81% of the world. In 2003 more than 50% of the discretionary budget was military spending and those numbers do not include the cost of wars in Iraq and Afganastan. In fact, the #1 U.S. export is not food or medicine but military weaponry.
In
1961 President Eisenhower warned Americans “In the councils of government,
we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether
sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential
for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist”.
And here we are 43 years later with a Vice President Dick Cheney who resigned
as CEO of Haliburton, a military contractor, to take the job of vice president
of the United States of America.
